Default Moving Shine Tutorial (PdN) - Monday, September 1st, 2008

This Tutorial is separated in 3 Stages:
[list=1][*]How to make the Background.[/*:m:3h79d6gz][*]How to make the light Effects.[/*:m:3h79d6gz][*]How to Animate the Picture with:
  1. Photoshop.[/*:m:3h79d6gz]
  2. Flash[/*:m:3h79d6gz]
  3. APNG Editor (Firefox 3 Plug-in).[/*:m:3h79d6gz]
[/*:m:3h79d6gz][/list:o:3h79d6gz]

Stage 1

Open Paint.NET and make a new picture. (size 450x200)

Step 1:

Make 1 Layer and name it “Background”.

Step 2:

Choose the "Gradient Tool" and then the "Linear (Reflected)" option. Also make your Primary color Black or White. For your secondary color choose a color that you want. I choose Red.

Step 3:

Move your mouse on 225x100 -> Click -> Drag your mouse down until 225x200 -> Press Control (CTRL) + D.

Add you penguin and some other things that you. You finished Stage 1.

Stage 2

Step 1

Make two new layers. “Shape” and “Feel”. Select the “Shape” Layer.

Step 2

Select the “Line / Curve Tool”.
Place your mouse on 0x0 -> Click -> Move until 450x0.
You should have something like in the picture above.

Step 3

On the line you drew you should have 4 squares.
Go to the first second square (150x0) -> Click and drag it until 120x100.
Now go to the second Square (300x100) -> Click and drag it until 330x100.

Step 4

Now, select the “Magic Wand Tool” -> Click in the blank space inside the shape -> Go to the “Feel” Layer -> Select the “Paint Bucket Tool” -> Select White as Primary Color -> Click in the selected area -> Delete the Shape Layer -> Look at the picture above.

Step 5

Double Click on the “Feel” Layer -> Change the Opacity from 255 to 100.
Now select the “Feather Tool” and change the options like in the picture above.

This is what you should have:

Stage 3
Sadly you can't animate with Paint.NET. But there are other animating programs. I will show you how to animate with the programs that I have.

Intro
Make a New Picture (150x200).
Make 3 Layers. “Black”, “Lines” & “Shine”. Picture
Feel the “Black” Layer with Black color using the “Paint Bucket Tool”. Go to the “Lines” Layer
Select the “Line/Curve Tool” and the White Color as Primary. Go to 0x0 and make a line until 75X200. Now go to 75x0 and make a line until 150x200.
Select the “Magic Wand Tool” and click in the blank space between the two lines. Go to the “Shine” Layer.
Select the “Paint Bucket Tool” and feel the selected space with White Color. Delete the “Lines” Layer.
Go to the “Shine” Layer and select the “Feather Tool”. Change the options like in the picture
Delete the Black Layer and double click on the Shine Layer. Change the opacity from 255 to 100.
You should have something like this. (You probably won't see it)

Photoshop
Open your picture and the Shine picture in Photoshop. Copy the Shine picture and go to the other Picture.

Go to Window -> Animation. Add the shine in the first layer but put it on the very left of the picture. Click the small icon in the picture. With that icon you will make a new Layer.
Go to the Layer with the Shine. Click on the layer with the Move Tool (V). In every new layer that you will make press 18-22 times the right button on your keyboard so your shine will move a little. When you finish you should have 33-37 Layers.
Now go to “Save for Web...”. Select Gif and save the picture. The quality simple sucks.

Flash
Open Flash. Double click on the 12.0 fps (See the picture) -> Change the dimensions (450 Width x 200 Height).
Now go to File -> Import to stage -> First import the first Picture -> Then import the Shine.
Click on the Shine and change the Properties like in the picture. Press F6 to add a new frame. In every frame click on the Shine and add 15 points in the X place (the one that is in the red square). I hope that you are good in maths . I made 4 speed versions. (Quality Sucks )
3.3 seconds
2.5 seconds
1.9 seconds
1.7 seconds

APNG Editor
There is one Problem with this. This editor will make APNG (Animated PNG). Only four browsers can show APNG’s:
  • Mozilla Firefox as of version 3 alpha 3 +[/*:m:3h79d6gz]
  • Opera as of version 9.5 +[/*:m:3h79d6gz]
  • KSquirrel as of version 0.7.2 +[/*:m:3h79d6gz]
  • XnView as of version 1.92 +[/*:m:3h79d6gz]

You can get APNG editor here but to use it you need Firefox 3.
So... First make all the pictures. In every picture the shine should be moved a little on right.
Then open the editor from Firefox -> Tools -> APNG Editor.
You can upload the pictures somewhere or find them in your Computer by clicking "Open File....".
Be sure to select: Looping -> Play Forever. Then click on "Save Animation...."
The animation will be to slow unless you change in every picture the 250 ms into 1 ms. Just click on 250 ms, change 250 to 1 and click the green button.
I made two versions.
15 point space between the shine.
30 point space bewteen the shine.

"I have a rendezvous with Death At some disputed barricade,
It may be he shall take my hand And lead me into his dark land
And close my eyes and quench my breath- I have a rendezvous with Death
And I to my pledged word am true, I shall not fail that rendezvous."
